Squid Game Season 3: Everything we know so far
All the information on the third and last season of the South Korean smash Netflix series
Officially, we are more than half through the “Squid Game” story. Following the first season of the South Korean series, which became the most-watched series on Netflix history, “Squid Game” season 2 carried on that winning run and assumed the No. 1 spot on the streamer’s Top 10 list soon after debut on December 26, so sustaining its reputation as one of the best Netflix shows available.
Our focus now is on season 3 of the dystopian drama as fans have formally caught up with Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the other competitors. Although producer Hwang Dong-hyuk never imagined the show running beyond its first nine episodes, the great worldwide popularity of its first season meant that further seasons were almost certain.
Back-to–back writing and filming for seasons two and three means that the wait for that big climax will luckily be far less than the three-year break separating the first “Squid Game” season from the second. Here’s all we currently know about “Squid Game” season 3, since the final season even seems closer than expected.
Third season of “Squid Game” release window
Only stating that the drop would occur somewhere in 2025, Netflix has not formally revealed the release date for “Squid Game” season 3. Still, a recent teaser trailer might have revealed the precise dates viewers would be expecting more drama from Front Man & co.
A video caption on Netflix Korea’s official YouTube account states that June 27, 2025 will see the third season premiere. Netflix swiftly deleted the advertising footage, apparently posted by mistake, but not before fans could capture the leaked date and spread it extensively on social media.
Regarding rounding up the “Squid Game” narrative, Hwang described season 3: “I am excited to watch the seed that was planted in establishing a new Squid Game blossom and yield fruit to the end of this story. We will try our best to provide you still another thrills ride.
Season 3 cast of “Squid Game”
Though the cast for “Squid Game” season 3 is yet unknown, fans could expect breakout actor Lee Jung-jae, who won a Primetime Emmy for the series, to resurfaced as protagonist Seong Gi-hun, who entered the deadly game in season 2 to expose the internal corruption.
Regarding corruption, Lee Byung-hun will once more be the menacing Game leader—also known as the Front man. Additionally returning as undercover police officer Hwang Jun-ho is Wi Ha-joon.
Reportedly accompanying them will be returning cast members including Park Gyu-young (as No-eul), Park Sung-hoon (as Hyun-ju), Yang Dong-geun (as Yong-sik), Jo Yuri (as Jun-hee), and Kang Ae-shim (as Jang Geum-ja).
Third season of “Squid Game” storyline
Though Dong-hyuk told Variety Gi-hun will be at a very “critical crossroads” in the third episode following his rebellious activities, an official description for “Squid Game” season 3 has not been announced.
(We should expect season 3 to continue off right where that dramatic season 2 finale ended, Gi-hun trying to stage a coup against the Pink Guards but having his efforts destroyed following a betrayal by Player 001 and The Front Man.)
“With Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his efforts failing, it’s now, what is he going to be like? Gi-hun will be in what condition? And his choice of action will be what? Will he carry on with the task? The series director, writer, and executive producer told the site he would either give up or keep on.
“And so as we start the third season, you will meet our character Gi-hun at a very crucial junction. Gi-hun won not be the man he was in Season 2.”
Dong-hyuk has also hinted that writing the second season of the program alters the finale of the whole production. Speaking with IndieWire, he said: “I wrote seasons 2 and 3 at the same time… and along the storyline, there is a turning point that takes place, and that leads to a series of different events, and also leads to a significant change in the character”.
“Relatively speaking, I came to know the season 2 ending really early on. But the way season 3’s finale turned out actually veers from what I had first imagined. He said, “while I was working on the story and working on the script, I saw this new road that I wanted to go down, and so the ending of season 3 actually changed in the process of creating season 2”.
Does a season 3 “Squid Game” trailer yet exist?
Though a full-length teaser hasn’t yet been unveiled, following the last episode of the second season, there was a post-credits clip buried. “If you view that clip, it’s going to give you a small clue as to where Season 3 might take you,” Hwang advised Variety. “I think that’s all I can say, for now.”
Like Young-hee, “is a new giant doll that we’re going to be showcasing in season 3,” Hwang said in the 15-second clip to Entertainment Weekly. “And that’s also a clue on the most thrilling game in season 3. Therefore, even if it hasn’t been announced yet, I think everyone would be thrilled to meet Cheol-su and the new game.
